We recently found a fantastic read from the Canada Business Network that provides great information on signs and your business.

In the article, they include an extremely helpful checklist for ordering a business sign. This checklist makes a perfect resource for anyone in the market for signs, as well as window graphics, vehicle graphics, and banners.

Highlighted below are some of the main points from the checklist. Consider these things as you prepare to choose a sign for your business:

1.  Who are your customers? 

• Evaluate your location. What area is your business in? Will your clientele vary according to the season?

2.  How will your sign communicate with customers?

• Make sure your message is clear and noticeable.

• Ensure that your sign is readable. Keep in mind the speed of traffic on your street.

3.  What are you trying to say?

• Keep your message short and simple to avoid confusion.

4.  What image are you trying to create?

• There are 2 basic design elements to your sign:

1. Physical elements of sign design:  size, placement, materials and structure.
2. Graphic elements of sign design: layout of the message, colors, lettering, shape, symbolism, harmony, and daytime versus night-time lighting conditions.

• Legibility = good sign design. The characters on the sign should be distinct from one another and the color combinations should make it easy to read.

5.  How much should your sign cost?

• The average life of a sign is 7 -11 years depending on the materials used, construction and exposure to elements.

• Consider these cost factors:

1. Maintenance costs
2. Energy consumption (if your sign is backlit or frontlit).
3. Is your sign custom or standard?

In the list below, we put together a few more tips we think will be helpful to you as you get ready to order your sign, banner, window graphics or vehicle graphics.

If you already have a design:

1. Do you have files for the sign?

• There are many types of file formats. At Identity Signs we print the following formats: EPS, AI, PDF and High-resolution JPEG. If you have a different file format, contact us and we will be happy to work with you and your needs.

• Make sure your file size is designed to match the size requirements of your sign. Using a smaller version can result in pixelation – which will look blurry. Not sure if your file design matches the sign dimensions? Contact us and we will take a look at it for you!

If you do not have a design:

1.  We can design it for you!

2.  Try your best to provide all the content you want to include up front.

• Write out any details such as contact information, business hours or calls to action –  and don’t forget to spell check!
  

3.  How you want your sign to look?

• Feel free to give us examples or draw us a picture – The more we know about what you want, the better!

4.  Consider the materials you want to use.

• The best options will depend on several factors:

1. What is your budget?
2. Will your sign be hanging, mounted or temporary (think real estate signs)?
3. Will the sign be located in full sun, shade, or a covered area?

• Let us know all this information so we can present you with the best possible options for your sign.

5. Keep in mind your deadlines.

• Don’t wait until last minute to order your sign!
